Honda's "Civic of the Skies" HondaJet has been in the creation phase for what seems like forever now, but it seems that the plane is getting closer to production. Recently, according to The Wall Street Journal, a fifth jet was completed and is now doing some testing.
The HondaJet is decidedly a Honda production. It uses a variety of automotive production techniques, and it focuses on value and fuel economy. Inside, various trim levels will be offered, and the plane should outperform many of its jet rivals in terms of fuel usage. It will also only cost $4.5 million.
The fifth jet prototype is being used for "function and reliability" testing, which is an advanced phase of testing that concentrates on interior components and cabin controls.
There is still the matter of certification, which means that, despite the new prototype tests, the plane won't be approved until the second half of 2014. That's a year later than the previous estimate, but Honda Cars of Rock Hill feels that it's certainly worth waiting for. After all, it seems that the HondaJet will be the closest we get to a flying Honda Civic anytime soon!
