It's easy to guess that if an automaker petitions the IIHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety) to purposely destroy one of your minivans, you know it's got to have something special going for it. When it comes to the 2014 Honda Odyssey, that description is fairly accurate. This popular minivan is forging a legacy of firsts, from the first-ever onboard vacuum cleaner, to now, the first-ever Top Safety Pick + designation for a minivan.

In order to garner this high safety honor, the Odyssey had to perform in the top tier of the four main tests, and mid-range in the overlap test. Judging from the car's designation, it looks like the Odyssey performed quite well, indeed.

The new Odyssey takes advantage of several new implementations that no doubt had a profound effect on the vehicle's safety rating. Primarily, Honda took advantage of higher strength steel in the door frames, and was able to shed weight from other areas of the car to preserve performance. Additionally, they've extended the reach of the side-curtain airbags for increased protection.

Other safety and assist features available on the Odyssey include ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure and Vehicle Stability Assist.

Being the Honda fans that we are, we can't help but mention that the Odyssey isn't the only vehicle in the automaker's lineup that meets the IIHS Top Safety Pick + designation. The Accord and Civic also have this label as well.
