Honda already offers an optional diesel engine for the Civic, and soon the manufacturer's popular SUV, the CR-V will also see that option.

The anticipated 2.2-liter engine will certainly offer better fuel economy, but to start the diesel-powered CR-V will only be available in all-wheel drive vehicles. That AWD system will actually be slightly different than the regular unleaded fuel-powered CR-V. The new Real Time 4WD with Intelligent Control is anticipated to react faster and give you better control on slippery surfaces.

The diesel CR-V will come with your choice of a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed auto transmission. Diesel versions of both the CR-V and the Civic come with some extra tech gear, as well, including a satellite navigation system, six-speaker audio system and Bluetooth capabilities.

Design-wise, the diesel model of the CR-V looks slightly different, with the most noticeable changes apparent in the grille, LED headlights and taillights. Inside, the diesel version uses a slightly different trim and materials.

As far as the ride goes, we hear the new version of the CR-V is quiet and rides smoothly, especially for a diesel vehicle.

The diesel version of the CR-V is first being developed in the UK market, so we aren't exactly sure when it could come stateside. We'll be sure to keep our ears open for further developments though.
