The all-new, fully-redesigned 2017 Honda Ridgeline does a nice job of walking the line between offering the comforts of a crossover and the hauling and workmanlike capability of a pickup truck, concludes Tom Voelk, auto critic for The New York Times, in a new review. In addition to its innovative blend of crossover riding and cargo hauling credentials, unique features include the Ridgeline’s lockable trunk, an unusual amenity for a pickup. This is a storage space under the 5-foot-4-inch bed’s load floor that is the size of a very large cooler (and with a drain plug, it can be used as one). A 115-volt outlet in the bed can power anything from a boom box to a chain saw, and Voelk noted the in-bed audio system which, instead of speakers, uses exciters to vibrate the walls of the bed. It’s not audiophile-grade sound but it’s decent.
The Honda gallops from zero to 60 miles per hour in just under 7 seconds. The 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 with 262 pound-feet of torque sounds like a smooth Honda engine. It has a payload capacity of 1,584 pounds and max towing ability of 5,000 pounds.
