In California, officials want all newly constructed homes to be "zero net energy" by 2020. That means the structure will produce more energy than it consumes, thus giving the area a surplus to be used when needed. Honda, however, is looking to achieve that much sooner, stepping up to build the Honda Smart Home.

That's right, Honda is building homes. It's not much of surprise, considering the company has its hands in many different industries outside of automobiles as they help to make the world a more efficient place to live.

The home will be built on the University of California, Davis campus and features a solar power system that will generate more electricity than the average house does in a single year. To do that, Honda has developed the Energy Management System, which is able to put the solar and grid-generated power in to balance.

An efficient HVAC and lighting system will also be installed to keep the low energy theme going, while the house will also have a separate system that can charge electric cars. That means the Honda Fit EV can be parked in the driveway and get a full charge while the system directly takes DC power to the vehicle, making for a quick turnaround.

We find all of it very cool at Honda Cars of Rock Hill, but don't think it's going to make us jump in to real estate.
